Healthy Mama = Healthy Babe

Thanks to the many beautiful and health- conscious women in my life, I have a new found obsession. It’s called Cacao powder (pronounced kuh-cow). It is chocolate-y and delicious, and healthy. It’s also sugar-free and my sister and mother have been making delightful shakes for breakfast (and sometimes lunch and dinner) with it. I know I sound like a commercial, but I swear they’re not endorsing me, although I wouldn’t be opposed to that…hint, hint to all my Cacao peeps…

It is not just the Cacao that has me excited, it is the wonderful things that go into this shake. We have some major “super foods” here:

  • 1-2 (big) tbsp of Cacao powder
  • a pinch of Goji berries (otherwise known as wolfberries)
  • 1 tsp coconut oil (which is something you should consider always replacing butter and olive oil with)
  • a splash of aloe vera juice (just a splash!)
  • 1 tbsp agave syrup (depending on how sweet you like it)
  • 1/2 cup of unsweetened almond milk
  • 5 cubes of ice
  • 1 banana
  • 1 tbsp (heaping, according to my Mom) of natural peanut butter

Overwhelming? It doesn’t have to be, I suggest starting out with just a couple ingredients and work these other nutrients in. All you need for a healthy and chocolate-y shake is the Cacao, peanut butter (organic if you can), the almond milk, a banana and agave syrup. This alone will crave any sweet tooth. Trust, I am a professional addict over here.

Many people are very concerned with counting calories. Perhaps we should be a little more concerned with what nutrients our bodies may or may not be getting. If we go on a lifestyle-diet (that’s my new word, ya like?) of adding foods instead of constantly taking things away that we deem “bad” or “fattening,” we will start to notice a difference in our willingness to become healthy. We will start to see how our body feels and reacts when we put these nutrients in it, and I promise you, you will start to resist the “bad.” Like an old ex, you will kick them to the curb with no regrets.

P.S. You may think this shake sounds good for dessert- don’t do it. It is very filling and you feel more like a stuffed pig. Eat it before a meal first to see if you even want anything else.
